Inner city children can be challenged beyond human endurance by the complex circumstances of their lives. Through the deep soulful expressions in the following images, is revealed some of the torture that is part of the every day lives of these children.
However these images also convey a strength and a courage which we may not always expect… I worked with these children over a period of time and found such bravery ….
On a recent commission documenting the day’s events at an Educational conference, I made some “30 second portraits”! I had less than an hour to capture 100 faces! The combined effect of the unexpected,the speed at which we worked,and the excitement of being the subject of a professional photo shoot, led to some really great spontaneous expressions! My subjects came alive at just the moment that I hit the shutter release and had no time to get bored or anxious! Most were delighted with the results at the end of the morning.
I was commissioned recently to capture the essence of a nursery school in action. The children often just wanted to be in my pictures! They kept on following my lens!
